The tastes of Xanthi

You're looking for a unique and memorable culinary trip and like to enjoy the combined pleasures of food, wine and travel? So you have to visit Xanthi, where different tastes between west and east merge into a unique pleasure.

Xanthi, the capital of its prefecture, first built on hill slopes between three of the oldest monasteries of Thrace. The city got its worldwide fame and fortune during the seventeenth and eighteenth century due to the tobacco cultivation and trade. The beneficence consequence of this was the reconstruction of the Old Town’s structure. Just a step away from the New Town you enter the Old Town walking on tiled alleys of a beautiful city.

Old Town is a well maintained and a distinctive preservable architectural structure, a case of urban planning. It has a human face and the houses seem to be in a dialogue. There are small gardens where honeysuckle enchants the passer, jasmine is proud for its blossoms and gates that compete for their balusters. Doors were made by skillful carpenters. A banquet of creations… The colors of houses are close relatives of the natural scape.

Avdera village seems just a small rural village but really is a living history, an ancient culture, the birth land of geniuses Democritus, Protagoras, Anaxagoras and more.

The culinary trip begins at the top of the Old Town where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Xanthi. You will head down the picturesque Old Town on foot observing its structure and exquisite architecture of mansions and houses. During your descent you pass the Metropolis (head of churches), the Folklore Museum, which you will visit; and the Municipal Art Gallery to meet your cook chef at the old municipal market where you decide all together what you will prepare for lunch. After the groceries are done you head by car, jeep or minibus to the village of Avdera, at the Vourvoukeli winery. There the cook chef tells you a few guidelines of GreekThraciann cooking and then teaches you how to prepare the meal you have chosen. Enjoy the taste of Xanthi! The meal is accompanied with organic wine from the winery. After you finish lunch, you head to the village for a cup of coffee and then return to Xanthi.
