The first stop for visiting is Porto Lagos situated in the southeast part of the prefecture of Xanthi, between Lake Vistonida and Thracian Sea. The aquatic biotope of Lake Vistonida is regarded as an attraction for the ecologists of the world. More than 200 species of wild birds spend the wintertime in this area.
The Monastery of Agios Nikolaos is located in the Vistonida Lake, the 2nd largest lake in Greece. This church is dedicated to St. Nicholas because a St. Nicholas icon was found. The monastery is a metochi, a dependency, of the Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos.
You continue to the city of Xanthi, with a beautiful old town and nice cafes, the oriental flair and old mansions of the tobacco merchants. In Xanthi you can see Greek Orthodox churches, as well as mosques.
Every Saturday the popular and colorful weekly market takes place in Xanthi. This looks back on a long history. Variety of goods was offered for sale in the years of the Ottoman Empire here. That’s why the market is popular for the still oriental flair. Today you can find fruits, vegetables, clothes, fabrics, olives from different regions and many other things.
After visiting the city enjoy a typical prepared Greek coffee with a beautiful view over the city.
