Kavala, the blue city

Kavala is the capital of the prefecture and is geographically located in Eastern Macedonia. The city of Kavala is located at the foot of the mountain "Symbolo" and is the second largest city and port of Macedonia. Kavala has over 80,000 inhabitants and is one of the most picturesque cities in Greece. It is a city that many people rank among the most beautiful and picturesque of our country.

Accommodation

Hotel Lucy is a three minute drive (2 km) from the central port of Kavala. The hotel’s distance from all crucial locations of the region is ideal. You need just 3 minutes by car to reach Egnatia Odos and 40 minutes for the Megas Alexandros airport. Hotel Lucy operates throughout the year. It is built on the western cape of Kavala.

The path of the water/Old Kavala : Old Kavala has always been known for its many waters. A blessed land, rich in springs with crystal clear and cool waters. Five kilometers south of the village, is the region '' Soumpasi '' or '' Mother of the water ', a site that has plenty of them. When Ibrahim Pasha took over the water supply of Kavala (1523-1536), this area of ​​the Old Kavala seemed ideal as it had all the requirements. It was also a proven solution from the Byzantine period, was far few kilometers from Kavala, was rich in springs and the main, and had a higher altitude than the city.Originally built an underground tank, where he gathered the waters of the surrounding springs, then through the stone ditches and ornate bridges, water reached the aqueduct of Kavala.


Hike:This is the most important path of Kavala, not only because of its aesthetic value, but primarily for the particular historical and cultural information available.The route is divided into two sections. The first half, with a length of 5 km, arrives from Kavala to the "Mother of Water" at "Three Karagatsia". The second half, with a length of 5.5 km, reaches the village of Old Kavala.The first section follows the path followed and water, supply water to the city during the Turkish occupation. The trail passes through five stone bridges and winds up in the old covered ditch where the water flowed to reach the impressive aqueduct, "the Arches" in Kavala.

A tour around the Old City (Panagia): The most important sights in Panagia district are the Castle, the Acropolis, the Imaret and the old Lighthouse, beneath which the rocks of Panagia are situated. The landmark of the Old City is the Mohamed Ali square, dominated by its statue, situated between the “konaki” (his house built at the end of the 18th century) and the church of Panagia, built in 1965 on the ruins of an older post-Byzantine three-aisled basilica. A tour around the Mohamed Ali Street will lead you to the oldest district of the city, where you will have the chance to visit Hussein Bey Mosque (or Music Mosque).

Waterfall Livaditis: The mountain range of Central Rhodope is the intersection of vegetation from north and south. Hike:The walk begins in the north of the village Livaditis and leads through dense beech and oak forest in to the impressive 40-meter waterfall, which is located in a creek between 2 peaks.

Hike through the gorge of Nestos: The range along the gorge of Nestos is one of the most beautiful river walks in Greece. The well-maintained path that is carved out of the rock of the mountain slope, takes place on the east bank of the Nestos and high above the river valley of the gorge along the steep slopes. From here you have a wonderful view over the valley.

Hike:Starting point is the village Komnina. After the last houses of the village the paved path leading after an hour rise in ruined village Kromniko at 500 m.We cross the village passing by the ruined school and lower after the tap; we find the well-preserved old cobbled road constantly descends. In about half an hour, we see on our right the Nestos. The trail descends into the dense vegetation of oaks to the railway line.From here the trail follows along the river before crossing the beautiful forest wader, sometimes climbing the cliffs carved above the galleries of the train.Alternatively, the river Nestos can be explored by canoe. The path of “Palia Kavala”: It is worth to explore the environmental path Old Kavala. Located along the stream of the village and covering a route of approx.3 km. Just below the road that leads to the Old Kavala.

Hike:It is a place of great natural beauty, where you will discover the hidden beauties of nature, you will enjoy the shade of plane trees will cool down by the crystal waters of the springs and enchanted by the wild beauty of the region. The wild scenery in combination with the feeling of the sound of the splash of water tireless composes a unique experience.You will even come across a watermill which can visit and get acquainted with the traditional way of grinding. They will also see the older mill ruins that stand well hidden in dense vegetation. It will still be confronted with small caves and cliffs that dominate imposingly along the path.Coming closer you can the gurgle of the water echoes. Cataracts that falls from a height of about fifteen meters, is divided into two levels. The rushing waters have carved the rock and thereby create two impressive “vathres” with crystal waters.It is certain that you will be thrilled by the hiking trail of the old Kavala and fascinated by the magic landscape will be revealed in front of him.
